This GoWesty-designed bracket makes it possible to install a later 1983-91 style transaxle into a 1980-83 air-cooled Vanagon. Not for 4WD Syncro transaxles.

In addition to this bracket, you'll also need the following related items that are sold separately:
• 1983-91 Vanagon water-cooled transaxle
• 1983-91 Vanagon shifter system—from the shift knob all the way back to the transaxle. Some of these items are avalable new through GoWesty (see related items), others will need to be sourced used. Locating a complete used shifter system is the best way to go.
• Transaxle Mount for 2WD 1980-91 automatic and manual transaxle. Aftermarket, approximately 95mm (3-3/4”) wide where the bolt passes through*

Important installation notes:
The rear half of the shifter system will have to be shortened about 2", because the transaxle ends up sitting about 2" further forward in the vehicle compared to later-model Vanagons. *This adaptor is designed to fit the commonly available, wider type trans mounts that we sell. If your mount is the odd, narrower type, you will need to make up the gap by using 10mm flat washers if/as needed, or buy a new mount.

Warning: This job is not easy, and this bracket does not come with instructions. Our sales/service staff cannot help you with this challenging installation. We highly recommend this job be performed by individuals with lots of experience and tools or—even better—by a professional shop.
