Well, almost...We can have this puppy ready to roll in about a week.

Jack and Hank just bought their DREAM MACHINE! They did not need/want the off-road treatment, so we scaled it back a bit for them as follows:

GoWesty lifting springs swapped out with regular-height springs gotta fit in the garage!)
BFG's swapped out with Goodyear tires more suitable for street
Skid plate and tire carrier swapped out with spare tire in regular spot.
Trans with Syncro full locker swapped out for one with just posi-traction

Gotta love the versatility of these Vanagons!

Nice buy, Jack and Hank!

Subject: 857 Trip Report

Hi Lucas,

Just wanted to let you know that we are very happy with our Westy. The trip home (from Nevada to Missouri) with our grandsons went well. I think they will remember this time we had together seeing the US for a long time. We wish we could have spent more time around Zion and Bryce as well as SW CO, but we'll return on future trips. Eastern CO and all of KS -- what a slog! We went thru torrential rains there, and the van and the tires performed admirably; plenty of opportunity for hydroplaning and I didn't detect it once. One of the gas stations we filled up at must have filled their tanks during the downpour. As soon as we left, the engine had a horrible "miss" on the slightest deceleration, and at rpm above about 3800 there was a godawful loud whirring like I had another engine going at high rpm. I had never experienced "bad gas(gasoline)" before, but the symptoms went away when I filled up again after a half tank gone.

This van loves the mountains. With the taller 3rd and 4th, I anticipated needing 2nd on steep, winding roads. We were on plenty of them, some of which my wife would only look at the uphill side, and 3rd was as low as I got once past 2nd at start.

I wish I could have used cruise (esp. thru the Jayhawk state), but it stopped working. I went thru the Bentley Manual t-shooting procedure and found out that it was a simple fix (the test light between terminals 1 and 3 that was supposed to go out when the clutch or brake pedal was depressed didn't light to start with) -- now if I can just find the little white plastic button that was on the clutch pedal switch; I did not know what it was for when I first found it, but I kept it -- must be in a pocket somewhere. Anyway, the switch hits the pedal without it, so I screwed the switch down closer so it activates like it should (fixed for now)

The AC worked well after the relay was replaced -- thanks much for your help with that problem. I would recommend the shop (D & L Service) in Cortez, CO -- they were first rate pros -- started before the time they said they would, spoke "Vanagon" fluently, explained the issue clearly, and were open to suggestion on possible cause after they first told me they could find nothing inoperative in the system. Also, they did not hesitate to call you when I suggested that.

I can't say enough about how grateful we are for your help as we began life with the Westy.

Subject: Calendar +

Hi Lucas,
Jack and Hank from MO here. Got the calendar today -- thanks. I have photos of our (Go) Westy and will send some current ones before this year ends. Continue to dig 857; cold doesn't appear to be a problem for it, altho' we did escape below zero and 20+ inches of snow when we went to Canyon Lk between Austin and San Antonio last month. We were there for about a week, camping in a Corps of Engineers park. Their campgrounds are always first rate, altho' we were the only camper shorter than 30', I swear. All very nice people, but when I saw a Casita (very small camp trailer that managed to sneak in) with a satellite antenna, I longed for the more primitive camping we are used to!
Anyway, wanted to say hi and let you know we are still "out there".
Jack
